Tour Introduction

The Zand Dynasty Heritage Tour takes you into one of the most important periods in the history of Shiraz, when Karim Khan Zand established the city as the center of his government and transformed its urban landscape with a remarkable collection of administrative, commercial, religious, and public buildings.

The tour begins at Karim Khan Citadel, one of the most recognizable architectural landmarks of the Zand period. We then continue to Nazar Garden and its elegant pavilion, today known as the Pars Museum, where the tomb of Karim Khan Zand is located.

The journey continues through the historic Vakil complex, including Vakil Bazaar, Vakil Mosque, and Vakil Bath. At the bazaar, we explore the commercial heart of historic Shiraz; at the mosque, we discover the distinctive religious architecture of the Zand era; and at the bathhouse, we learn about traditional Iranian social life and bathhouse architecture.

Throughout the tour, you will hear the story of Karim Khan Zand, his title Vakil al-Ra'aya, the development of Shiraz during the Zand period, and the lasting influence of this era on the historic center of the city.

Itinerary

Day 1

Shiraz in the Age of Karim Khan Zand

We begin the tour at Karim Khan Citadel, where we explore its architecture and its role in the governmental center of Zand-era Shiraz.

We then continue to Nazar Garden and the pavilion that now houses the Pars Museum. Here, we learn more about the life and rule of Karim Khan Zand and visit the place associated with his tomb.

The tour continues to the Divan Khaneh and then into the historic Vakil complex. We walk through Vakil Bazaar and discover the commercial structure and atmosphere of old Shiraz.

Next, we visit Vakil Mosque with its distinctive prayer hall and stone columns, followed by Vakil Bath, where we explore traditional Iranian bathhouse architecture and the social life of Shiraz during the Zand period.

On the full-day version of the tour, time can also be included for lunch, shopping, and free exploration inside Vakil Bazaar.
